Deaf Shalom Zone -Empowering People who are Deaf or DeafBlind

Reports to: Coordinator and to the Board of Directors 

Type: Part-time up to 15 hours/week including some Sundays

Salary: $15/hour

Purpose: To serve as a staff member of an organization which seeks to bring Shalom to Deaf and DeafBlind individuals and the Deaf community.  What is Shalom?  To be restored and made whole, to have peace through justice, and just systems, to enjoy full access and full participation in Community.

Description of the Deaf Shalom Zone “CARE” Model

  • Case Management: to help individuals understand their mail and personal transactions, evaluate their health and safety needs and access supports, acquire and utilize assistive technology, connect with social and economic opportunities, and more. 
  • Advocacy: to teach, model, and support self advocacy.  Inform individuals and the community about the right to equal access under the law, assist employers and service providers in meeting the needs of Deaf consumers. 
  • Referrals: to assist Deaf and DeafBlind individuals, their family members and caregivers to locate and access support services available through government and private agencies, companies, and organizations and connect Deaf and DeafBlind individuals with students and other volunteers.  
  • Education: to partner with local colleges and high schools to provide students with the opportunity for Service Learning and internships, thus promoting the Deaf Community’s role in formation of the next generation of interpreters and social service providers.  


Requirements: The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language, Reading and Writing in English, use of Communications Technology including video-phone, email, sms text messaging on a variety of platforms, and Zoom or other virtual meeting platform.  Must have BA or some college in Deaf Studies, or Education, Human Services or Social Work or another related field.  Reliable personal transportation.


Schedule: Alternate Sundays with the Coordinator, one set weekday for office hours, some flexibility during the week to work with clients in the office, meet them at offices of service providers in order to advocate for ada rights, etc. plus 1 supervisory meeting each week and board meeting every other month, usually in the evening via zoom.
