Deaf Shalom Zone is a nonprofit agency serving Deaf and DeafBlind individuals and their families in the Baltimore area free of charge and regardless of religious affiliation.
Our case managers help individuals understand their mail and personal transactions, evaluate their health and safety needs and access supports, acquire and utilize assistive technology, connect with social and economic opportunities, and more.
Individuals and groups are responsible for self advocacy, asserting their right to equal access under the law, and influencing lawmakers and policy makers. We offer support and information as Deaf and DeafBlind individuals inform their employers and service providers about the legal obligation to provide equal access and ask for accommodations. We also partner with groups and organizations to bring attention to issues that have an impact on Deaf and DeafBlind individuals. We encourage and support Deaf and DeafBlind individuals to be responsible consumers of interpreting services, regardless of who is paying, and to provide feedback to interpreters and their agencies, positive or negative.
Deaf Shalom Zone is not a provider of direct service, but we know who is. We help Deaf and DeafBlind individuals and their families and care givers locate and apply for support services available through government and private agencies. We connect Deaf and DeafBlind individuals with students and other volunteers.
Educating the Hearing: American Sign Language students from the Hearing and Speech Agency and area high schools and colleges who volunteer with Deaf Shalom Zone have the opportunity to engage in authentic communication with Deaf and DeafBlind individuals and begin to experience Deaf Culture. Deaf Shalom Zone partners with area schools to provide invaluable immersion experiences for ASL learners, and a firm foundation in Deaf Culture for the next generation of social service professionals who will serve the Deaf community.
Educating the Deaf: Collaboration with hearing presenters and a team of experienced interpreters we are able to bring a variety of topics to the Deaf consumer: finance, identity security, health and cooking, end of life decisions, single stream recycling, first aid/CPR, Census and voting and much more.
