History

In January of 2000, Christ United Methodist Church of the Deaf was selected by the Baltimore-Washington Conference as a Shalom Zone site, and in 2000 the Deaf Shalom Zone Inc., a separate 501c3, was established. The Deaf Shalom Zone provides a multiplicity of services to meet the needs of the greater Baltimore culturally Deaf (those who use sign language), Deaf/Blind, and hard-of-hearing community, sometimes assisting individuals across the state of Maryland and occasionally in other states.

The Deaf Shalom Zone Inc. focuses on three major areas of activity:

·   Case Management services

·   Development of new service programs

·   Advocacy, empowerment, and leadership development in the Deaf community.

Population served

§   800+ culturally Deaf, 100 Deaf/Blind and 100 hard-of-hearing

§   Individuals come from Baltimore City and the five surrounding counties.  The Deaf Shalom Zone, Inc. sometimes assists individuals across the state of Maryland and occasionally in other states.

§   There are an estimated 24,000 culturally Deaf individuals in metropolitan Baltimore. This community is often overlooked by social services and agencies that provide services to hearing individuals that are inaccessible to the Deaf.
